Sometimes you don’t need a polished design tool. You just want to draw something quickly and get it out of your head. A simple drawing board does exactly that: a blank sheet, a pencil, and nothing else in the way.

Pick up the pencil

Open the drawing board and choose the freehand tool. Pick a colour and a stroke width, then draw straight onto the sheet. Switch to a thinner stroke for detail or a bolder one to block things in.

Add shapes when freehand isn’t enough

Freehand is great for doodles and arrows, but sometimes you want a clean box or a straight line. Drop in a rectangle, an ellipse or a line, or add a snippet of text to label part of the sketch. Mixing freehand strokes with a few tidy shapes covers most quick drawings.

Save your sketch

When you’re happy with it, export to PNG for a flat image or SVG for a scalable file. You can also copy the drawing to your clipboard and paste it straight into a note, a message or a slide.

Everything happens on your own device, and your sketch is never uploaded, so it’s a safe place for rough early work you’re not ready to share.

Frequently asked questions

Can I draw with a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen?
Yes. Freehand drawing works with a mouse, a trackpad, a touchscreen or a stylus. A stylus or touchscreen feels the most natural for sketching, but a mouse is fine for quick shapes and notes.
How do I undo a mistake?
Press Ctrl + Z (or Cmd + Z on a Mac) to undo, and add Shift to redo. You can also select a stray line and delete it.
